Focus On You

by Vikki Wheaton, What's Hot Magazine

When you're feeling low, it's been a particularly bad day at work, or you're starting to see those gray hairs creeping in at the tender age of 30, an expensive vacation doesn't have to be the answer. You can take a break for a few hours and emerge exhilarated with a new lease of life for FOCUS SALON :: Cayman Islands Hair&Beauty Salon - Charlene Barnessuch a reasonable price that you may just start treating your favourite person on a regular basis. It's time you focused on yourself, and so what better place to go than the new salon "Focus" located in the marquee Stores next to the Cinema?

Charlene Barnes, a whirlwind of Scottish energy with a wealth of salon experience under her belt, had never had any interest in opening her own business. She was always quite happy working for others and seeing her impressive list of clients on a daily basis. In fact, included in that list (and definitely very impressive) was always my dear friend Lynne. Charlene was the only one she trusted to take her from a redhead to a blonde and back. So Charlene merrily worked away until a hurricane called Ivan arrived on her doorstep. Like many of us, her life changed, and after years of friends and colleagues encouraging her to go into business for herself, Charlene, with the unending help of her husband, Brian, opened Focus at the beginning of March, 2005.

This immediately popular salon has been doing very well, thanks to Charlene, her expertise and personality, as well as the staff she has working for her – a group of women who are professional and fun. All in all you find yourself in a very friendly atmosphere where comfort and a bit of a laugh go hand in hand.

FOCUS SALON :: Cayman Islands Hair&Beauty Salon - pedicure chairI had looked ruefully at myself in the mirror a number of weeks ago, observing that my hair displayed three definite layers of colour, courtesy of home treatments and clearly visible roots. Anyone who id familiar with my unruly locks will understand the thinly veiled look of horror on the faces of hair stylists when I walk in the door of their establishments, but it was time I acknowledged that this was a job for the professionals. I called Focus and managed to get a booking with Rain, a hairdresser new to the island who trained at the famous Toni & Guy and specialized in colour. To say that I was hungover on that Saturday would be a blatant us of understatement. The martinis at Bamboo the night before had come tick and fast like the brooms in Mickey's "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and I had dutifully kept up. I didn't know if I could face getting my coloured and as I entered the salon, I mapped out two routes to the bathroom before I slumped down in the chair. Instantly I was offered glasses of water, sympathy and smiles. We chose a colour and Rain got right to work separating the haystack that is my hair and lathering on the dark burgundy shade. She was cheerful and methodical, and it wasn't long before everything was evenly distributed and ready to set. I was handed a magazine, my water was replenished and I relaxed as my headache and feeling of nausea slowly abated. Another client was enjoying a manicure behind me, and the massage therapist was getting the treatment room ready for her next lucky customer. Everyone was in a good mood, which wasn't surprising as there's nothing like a salon day to cheer you up.

When it came time to wash my product out, we headed towards what is normally considered to be the discomfort part of a hair appointment – the sinks that test the resilience of your neck muscles. Know what? Focus has the most comfortable setup I have ever seen. Your feet go up FOCUS SALON :: Cayman Islands Hair&Beauty Salon - sinkson the recliner portion of the chair, and you are handed your own remote control to adjust the height of your position so the apparatus takes all the weight, not your neck. It was a pleasure to lie there and have my scalp rinsed and massaged as the glossy, permanent new colour revealed itself. My word, I was a beautiful creature!

Charlene has added many interesting personal touches to her salon that just make it feel different, not mention the fact that not only does she take all major credit cards, she also accepts CI$, US$, Euros, CAD$ and Pounds Sterling! Nice to know that if the Queen has to stop here for the day, she doesn't need a Bureau de Change if she fancies a pedicure. Focus is also proud to offer a selection of salon products, such as the "Guinot line of cosmetics and Kerastase hair products" for customers to purchase and continue their salon experience at home. Charlene (or rather Brian) replenishes stock on a regular basis, so always stop in and browse the latest trends.

Salons and spas are not just for the women anymore – many men are beginning to realize that clean, neatly clipped nails and clear skin aren't the end of the world, and a massage could be just what the doctor ordered.

It is so easy for us all to lose focus as we are distracted by problems at work and other obstacles that life throws at us. We need to take care of ourselves and get a break from everyday, mundane rubbish that blocks thought processes and weighs us down. Make it a priority in your life to set aside some personal time, and let Focus help you focus on you!
